Sun Mountain KG:3 Cart Bag Review

Form follows function is the principle that the shape of an object should be primarily based upon its intended function or purpose.  As a former Art Director I understand the concept and logistics of this saying while the golfer in me thanks those responsible for bringing innovation and thought to the extraordinary designs they create.

I knew from the first Sun Mountain bag I owned, they would have a customer for life. When I returned to the game of golf 2 1/2 years ago my focus was on functionality from a walking golfers perspective and the Superlight 3.5 did not disappoint.

Today, based on time constraints, playing cart golf is the way to go for me. Enter the 2013 Sun Mountain KG:3 Cart Bag.

Form and Function: One of the first things you notice on the KG:3 Cart Bag are the 15 cushioned individual dividers for your clubs and the front and center compartment for your putter. The slots gradually cascade down based on the length of your clubs. The top row has 2 slots for your driver and fairway woods, rows 2-4 consist of four individual slots across for your remaining clubs including room for training aids such as alignment sticks. The slot for your putter sits out enough so it does not come in contact with the rest of your clubs. There is very minimal club chatter while driving or even walking and getting clubs in and out of the dividers is a cinch.

The shape of the bag forms really well to the rear bays of the carts. There are no problems strapping the bag into place and the fit is nice and snug.

There are a total of 8 forward facing pockets which are very easy to get to while attached to the back of the cart and one open pocket for beverages. A designated cell phone pocket is located inside one of the larger pockets to ensure your electronics remain safe. All the pockets provide ample amount of space for all your golf accessories. The Sun Mountain KG:3 also includes a useful towel ring that you can attach accessories with carabiners to. The back side of the bag has another zipper pocket to store your shoulder strap in while it is attached to the cart and loop rings on the base and center of the bag to secure an umbrella.

Surrounding the top of the bag are 3 easy to grab handles for lifting the bag out of your car or on and off the car as well as a built in grab handle at the base of the bag. Sun Mountains innovative team of designers did a great job to include all this functionality in a cart bag that only weighs 6.5 pounds. The materials used on the KG:3 Cart Bag are light weight and very durable. There are 6 different color combinations to choose from so you are almost guaranteed to pick one that matches your personality.

Conclusion: Sun Mountain has been the driving force in the evolution of golf bag design since 1984. They are responsible for many industry firsts, including the first to use backpacking technology to produce a lightweight nylon golf bag and the first to develop a stand bag with integral legs. Whether you are a walker or you prefer to ride, Sun Mountain has a bag for you. The KG:3 offers the rider everything they can possibly need for a round of golf. At $214, you get a bag that has exceptional quality and gives new meaning to form follows function.
