Callaway RAZR X Black Fairway Woods Review

Callaway got it right with this line of Fairway Woods!  We were fortunate to get a firsthand look and test of the RAZR X Black 3 and 5 woods.  The 3 Wood has 15* of loft with a lie of 55*.  The 5 Wood has 19* of loft with a lie of 56*.   Callaway is one of few manufacturers that also offer the RAZR X Black fairway woods in a 4 wood, 7 wood, and a 24* 9 wood.

Looks
Callaway released an aggressive looking line when it comes to the RAZR X Black.  This fairway
wood has a low profile address with more of a tour shape head.  The RAZR X Black has a crisp black finish, dark graphics, and steel accents to complete its menacing look.

Feel
The RAZR X Black fairway wood is truly one of the great overall fairway woods that you feel comfortable hitting off the tee, off the deck, or even the short rough.   It is relatively light in comparison to many other fairway woods on the market.  Even though it has a tour shape head, it still has a deeper head weight which creates a higher and more forgiving ball flight to inspire a relatively easier swing.

Distance

Callaway incorporates their VFT technology which expands the sweet spot of these fairway woods.  VFT is a variable face thickness technology where the thickness of the face plate expands towards the heel and toe of the club face to maximize distance for off center hits.   Club Wars tests show that the RAZR X Black Fairway woods definitely hold their own in the category of distance.  They finished in the top tier for distance with the likes of the Callaway RAZR Fit, Nike VR pro LE, and Ping ANSER fairways.    The VFT technology and stainless steel construction combine to create a very hot face at contact to match an equally pleasing crisp sound as you admire your shot fly.

Forgiveness/Control
Not as much control and workability as some single digit handicap players would prefer, but these fairway woods make up for it in the category of forgiveness.   Our high handicap players seemed to hit this fairway wood the most consistent out of the bunch.  We were able to track all shots on our FLIGHTSCOPE launch monitor and the high handicap players achieved the most consistency with this club.

Overall

With a great blend of distance, forgiveness, and overall playability, the Callaway RAZR X Black fairway woods were one of the biggest surprises in this year.  The RAZR X Black fairways finished near the top in average overall distance and also won this year’s CLUB WARS award for most forgiving fairway wood.   It goes without saying that if you are in the market for a new set of fairway woods, Callaway has a couple of standouts that deserve your attention!  We would recommend these clubs for and mid handicappers and above.
