For the past couple years I've had the pleasure of meeting and working with Scott Peterson of Scott Golf. A small club builder from Utah but not a newcomer to club making. This year Scott introduced 2 new irons to his stellar line. I was able to get my hands on a set of his new SG-04 irons and from my friends at KBS, their Tour Custom Black XStiff shafts.
Scott's new SG-04 irons are his new 3/4 cavity back iron designed for maximum forgiveness and distance. Forged from the highest grade 1020 Carbon Steel, the SG-04 feels soft without compromising distance.
I have a good 5 rounds in now with my last 3 being 78, 75 and 79. I'm absolutely owning long par 3's with the long irons in the set and knocking them close with the mid irons and pin seeking with the money clubs! Super easy to hit, great weight and feel in my hands and just a sexy club to look at.
The SG-04 irons paired with the KBS Tour Custom shafts are giving me a straighter ball flight with a cut tendency with my long irons. I've always been a draw ball hitter but adding the cut has been a pleasant advantage for my game. I also don't feel the need to attack so hard with this setup. My tempo is more consistent and has smoothed out allowing the club to just do its thing.
Although not a typical "players" iron in looks, the SG-04 irons have a little more offset, wider sole and thicker top line. Better players should not let that deter you. A lot of my teaching pro friends who hit these irons tell me they perform better than their personal sticks with less effort. I highly recommend these sticks to a 10 and up handicap looking to improve their game but also to those sticks out there wanting to get the most out of their swing.
