took a lesson this morning, a month ago my game was on auto-pilot and the last few weeks I can't break 80. ( I know that some of you will not have sympathy but for a single digit handicap, it's not fun ) Took a lesson from a pretty solid teacher in my opinion and it was astounding how many bad habits I have formed in my setup and backswing, watching the video was painful...... but the bottom line is going back to the basics, proper setup, grip and swing plane. I paid the guy $80, was worth it, and I plan to see him on a regular basis. I did let him know that I don't take follow up lessons until I feel I have had the time to ingrain what we just worked on, I have a job and stuff and don't get to hit balls every day. He was fine with that, but I find a lot of instructors want you to see them weekly, nope, not for us working stiffs. It's what's best for ME, not your bank account. I digress....... Anyway, I was too over the ball, not enough spine tilt to the right at address which caused me to take it out over the plane and too steep which leads to a steep downswing and a holdoff after impact to not hit a nasty hook. My takeaway has to be flatter and deeper and when I do that correctly, it adds a TON of height to my shots and a better impact position with a swing on-plane and not steep. Ok, I've rambled enough, have you taken lessons? Is it painful for you to watch too?

I've taken a few of the golftec lessons, and boy are those videos of my swing are hard to watch haha. I think they are very helpful in moderation. When I look mine he also wanted to see me weekly, but I just don't have enough time for that either. My problem with those is that the lessons always seem to be very mechanical. I find myself after taking two or three lessons within a two month span feeling like a robot out on the course. I lose my comfort zone and its almost a struggle to find the correct swing. I've found it very helpful after taking lessons to not jump on the course right away, but to crank a lot of range sessions till you find the groove (Or get very frustrated and revert back to old swing  ).

on the back of the DVD he sent home with me (he sends a DVD with before/after swings and side/side comparisons with good swings from pros, mine is Ernie Els) it says: "If your focus is on the golf swing, don't worry about the golf shot. If your focus is on the golf shot, don't worry about the golf swing. The whole purpose of developing a better swing is to play golf, not golf swing."

I like that a lot.

I took a lesson in May, got my GHIN down to 7.1. It's leaking back up to almost a 10 now, so it's time for me to review my previous GolfTec lessons (they keep them on-line, so I can go back to them - and the drills - time and time again).
If that, and some practice doesn't do it - I'll sign back up for another lesson. I like to think I have pretty good basics and a little tune-up lesson is all I need, from time-to-time.

For those thinking about lessons....do it! In 2004, I was a 26+ handicapper. I took a 10-lesson set, over 20 weeks, and it was the best golf money I've ever spent. I went from hitting 7-iron/150 yard shots with a nasty slice to 200 yard shots with a slight draw. Invest in the game ... and you'll enjoy it a lot more. Though it wasn't all sunshine and roses, at first. I got worse, before I got better. But if you have a good teacher and practice what they teach - you will get better!

it's such a major backswing change that it still feels just awful, I know that will go away but it's not fun in the interim.
