Two months ago, Golfballed chose me along with three others to test the SCOR 4161 scoring clubs. Having heard nothing but good about SCOR and their awesome V Sole Technology, I was undoubtedly excited for the opportunity to test their clubs. To raise my excitement even more is the fact that I had never owned a set of wedges that worked for me. I either had wedges that I would dig straight in the ground with, or I couldn’t get in the ground at all. This obviously led to many, many bad shots which was very frustrating. I knew that this was hindering me big time, because the other parts of my game were good. So, needless to say I was euphoric when I was selected.
To start with, I got in touch with Beau from SCOR Golf. We discussed my game and my current setup, and then decided on which clubs would be more beneficial to me. The four club set I ended up going with was the 45°, 50°, 55°, and 60° as most of you already know. I was uncertain how I would like the pitching wedge as opposed to my stock PW. I’ve also always struggled with a lob wedge, so this was something I was looking forward to improving.
To begin this review, I would like to give you all an idea of what I was seeing in my short game prior to receiving the scoring clubs. As far as playing to certain distances on the course, I would try to stay in the 135-150 yard range. This meant I could take a full pitching wedge, and could be very accurate with it. And this isn’t even an actual wedge, just my stock wedge! When you get down to the gap, sand, and lob wedges you get a very mixed bag of results. Let’s look at some bullets to help.
• On hard pan surfaces, I never hit anything but thin shots. On softer conditions, I would find myself digging into the ground often.
• Out of sand, I was actually very good with the sand wedge, but not so much with the others.
• When hitting full shots, I could generate a decent amount of spin, but the lack of good contact obviously hindered this.
• Around the greens I was pretty good about being able to get the ball to release or check up when needed.
• When trying to control my distance, I often found myself making mistakes and going long or coming up short. I believe this was due to too much guess work.
Over the last two months, I have played around 100 par 3’s and have hit hundreds of range balls with these clubs. The first thing I noticed about them was the great feel you get on solid impact. I believe this can be attributed to the fine craftsmanship of the clubs, as well as the short game specific shafts they have. SCOR co-engineered the Genius shaft with KBS, and it fits perfectly in these clubs. The ball also takes an amazing flight when hit correctly, which again is related partly to the shaft. I also believe this perfect composition leads to excellent distance which I thought I would lose coming from Burner 2.0 clubs. The second thing I noticed was the deadly accurate shots I was producing. Time and time again it was like I was throwing darts at the flags. Just three days ago I played 27 holes at a par 3 course. I hit 24 greens which I considered extremely good for me. I was within 20 feet 20/24 times and within 10 feet 9/24 times. Third, I noticed that my shots were spinning more than usual. I figured this was due to the fact that I was actually making good, clean contact with the ball. While this was true, I also discovered on SCOR’s site the following: “SGC3 Progressive Weighting delivers better trajectories and distance control than any other wedges.” SGC3 stands for Short Game Control x 3 – Distance, Spin, and Accuracy. These are the first three things I noticed, and then I go to the web to see that it is one of the things they meant for everyone to see, and it’s clearly stated on their site. I thought this was pretty cool.
Next, I want to take a look back at the bullet points I made earlier and talk about what improvements (if any) I saw. First I talked about the different lie conditions I faced, and how inconsistent I was with them. SCOR 4161 scoring clubs have what is called V Sole Technology which I mentioned earlier. On their site, it says that the V Sole has never met a lie it didn’t like. This statement couldn’t be any truer. I hit literally 98% of my shots with these wedges pure, regardless of the surface I’m hitting from. Hard pans and mushy lies no longer scare me when I have wedges in my hand! My second bullet point dealt with sand shots. I am still hitting really good shots out of the greenside bunkers, and the ball usually checks up very nicely. I am happy with this. Third, I mentioned that I thought my spin was hindered due to the inconsistent contact I was making with the ball. I was right, as I have hit some of the nastiest shots ever with these wedges! I’m backing balls up, and stopping on a dime when needed, and this is something I’ve never been able to do. My fourth point was that I was pretty good about controlling the ball around the green. This still holds true, and I may have even gotten a tad bit better at it. It’s too close to tell though. Lastly, I was having a lot of trouble controlling distance. This was mainly on less than 100% swings, and I was faced with this scenario more than once. Ever since getting these clubs, I have been able to control my distance with ease.
To conclude this review, I’d like to say that there is one part of my game that has gotten better, that most wouldn’t think about. When I thought wedges, I wasn’t thinking about my putts per round improving. But sure enough, when you’re knocking the ball closer, inevitably you’re going to make more putts. And after all of the hits I’ve put on these clubs, they still look great. I’ve improved my short game beyond anything I could have imagined, and I’m now comfortable and confident when holding a scoring club in my hand, even the lob wedge. To sum up everything, I’ll say that these clubs deserve more than the Silver List from Golf Digest. There is obviously something great about these wedges, as other companies have started trying to integrate the same V Sole technology. What we have here is industry leading technology, no doubt.
I’d like to thank SCOR and Golfballed for allowing me the wonderful opportunity to test these clubs. Not only was this an awesome experience in which I got to work with the great people at SCOR, but I also found something that has tremendously helped my game and made me into a better golfer. THANKS!
