Why the change?

Sam:

Nothing too major.. just my eye isn't liking it as much. I am rolling the RIFE much better. Coupled with early results today after using the EDGE I nearly have to.

That's the truth! There is a tour player who was talked about on the broadcast today as having his eyes to far underneath the golf ball and they made mention of how he had worked to get his eyes up over the golf ball and has found an INSTANT increase (by a long shot) in made puts.

... Alignment is SO much of putting. Gotta start with the foundation and that begins when you step up and take your stance and position over the rock. I'm frustrated with myself for not remembering which player it was but I was wondering if it may have any correlation to the this putting mirror. A part of me would almost put a few dollars on it

If it is a mirror on any Tour - it is an EyeLine

There is another eye alignment factor to consider: Your eyes must both be down the line - if my head is not "level"- one eye higher than the other - then my optics will be messed up.

I totally was hoping so. That's pretty cool, Sam. Well done I saw another fellow using this on the practice green before playing off the tips today at PR. Very cool to see the EyeLine being used for improvement across the board!

So I made the change recently to my RIFE belly. I have worked the last few days with the RIFE in conjuction with the EDGE Putting Mirror. The first day or so it was a lot of experimentation with how and where I wanted to grip the putter. Having sorted that out I got to work.

Before I continue however, I just wanted to say that the EDGE aided me a lot in sorting out where I wanted to grip the putter. I found that holding it low (like the putter would be 31-33" long) the EDGE brought my eyes right over the ball where it should be.

Prior to using the EDGE here were the numbers from the distances of 3' intervals.

3 feet - 4/5

6 feet - 2/5

9 feet - 0/5

Honestly, my line with the RIFE was absolutely abysmmal.

After using the EDGE where I learned to grip it both comfortably and properly for my purposes.

3 feet - 5/5

6 feet - 4/5

9 feet - 2/5

The nine footers marked an improvement from the before. Also, while playing withmy son today I kept track of putts 9 foot and under. I was near perfect with my putting from these lengths. I missed one putt that was in the 3 foot range and I hit the slider a little too firm and it lipped out.

I have been using the gate drill predominantly and using this training aid has really conquered my former out to in putting stroke.

That is great analysis!
Improper putter length - or in your case - gripping length - is the #1 reason for poor setup. If the posture, balance, and eye lines are messed up, then it is hard to be consistent.

After weeks of putting woes and trying to get too technical with my approach, I decided to let it all out the window and start fresh from the basics. I first got into my stance as if I was going to stand over a putt. I used the putting mirror to see what a visual representation of my "Feel". I stood upright with a good spine angle and let my hands hand straight down with no tension or pressure of gripping anything. As I had my hands hang, I began rocking my shoulders (still with hands at shoulder width apart) and just got a really clean, pure sense for what the natural motion feels like. From there, I grabbed my putter and discovered the error of my prior ways and THE point of wrong doing within my setup. I was not getting my hands high enough at setup. I was letting my hands grip the putter and come closer to my body than what is appropriate thus the toe of my putter was significantly off the ground and my arms NOT working with my shoulders naturally.

I was not having ANY consistency with swing path before as I was starting either to the inside or the outside right from the start of my take back which was only being worsened by my body and brain trying to get back to square at impact. My putts WERE all over the place BUT now, with my hands higher and away from my body; remember, they are now set at that natural position hanging straight under my shoulders just at the same angle as my hands hanging freely with no putter in hand, and the movement is predictable, repeatable and stable. I know my stroke is going to be strong and confident and I'm hitting the sweet spot of the putter and making delicious contact with the golf ball with each stroke.

Todays total puts over 27 holes: 39 (Includes 2 chip ins which count as 0 putts).

Prior 27 holes: 49 ( I wasn't lying when I said I was going MAD in the putting department).

Again, EyeLine has been such a pivotal tool in being able to start from scratch and SEE what the set up looks like from the ground up from a fundamentals stand point.

39 putts in 27 holes and ZERO 3 putts; Heck YEAH!!!

I'd just like to say that after using this thing daily, my roommate and I are feeling pretty confident with our putting. It's definitely the best putting aid I've used, hands down. I think the fact that you can do so much with just the one mirror is what makes this the perfect aid.

Re: Eyeline Golf EDGE Putting Mirror Testing Thread 11 months, 3 weeks ago #34269

My putting has definitely came along way since using mirror. I can honestly say that I had only had a handful of 1 putts prior to using the mirror, but now I am having a handful putts each round. This past Monday's round was marked with five 1 putts and only two 3 putts. The rest were of course 2 putts. I continue to practice daily with the mirror and I see results each time I step onto the course. This has truly made a huge impact on my putting, and I would strongly advise anyone with putting woes to definitely give the mirror a try.

After golfing with the Mizuno rep yesterday, he was actually very encouraging and dare I say "Surprised" with how all my putts were falling. At his recommendation, I slept with my putter hahaha. Never had such a pure stroke until I used the mirror to break things down and start to build from the foundation up!

Less technical minded and more feel. That's my way to approach it.

Sam:

Absolutely correct. As a matter of fact I have a little update.

I have always been comfortble with a shorter putter. It allows my arms to hang freely and it really aids my overall set-up.

So after being away from the course a few days I tinkered a bit with my putter, my stroke and the EDGE. The long and short of it is that it absolutely confirms what you said towards the end of your response. The gripping length is absolutely vital and the EDGE really does proove this theory. Everytime that I gripped the putter further down the shaft the EDGE clearly demonstrated that my set-up was correct. Conversely, when I had the putter at its 34" length my eyes were nowhere near where they should have been. Resulting in poorly struck putts and even a couple that were scuffed.

I think the EDGE has tremendous benefits and set-up is a massive benefit. BTW.. I took the shorter gripping length (making it about a 32" putter) and the results were almost shocking. My strokes were rewarded with great rolls and consistent contact.

To the other testers... consider gripping length.

Funny thing I have a 33 1/2 putter length. Since using the mirror i found that gripping down farther has helped my putting. I am also put in a better position over the ball. My last 2 rounds much better and no 3 putts. I might even say I'm deadly from within 4 feet. I just get up and putt no more worrying. Aim fire in the hole.
