I played a round last week when the greens had just been punched. About halfway through I had missed a few easy putts so I decided I was just going to declare it a "practice round" and not enter it towards my handicap due to the conditions.

But, it turns out I played decent, I didn't break any rules along the way, and the score was good enough it would bring my handicap slightly lower. So I feel a little guilty by not entering it.

What's the community position here? Should I enter it or not?

I'm really hard on myself and count all strokes (only way I know if I'm truly getting better) so I would say you enter the score.

Yeah, and considering that the score would have been even lower if the greens hadn't just been punched, it does seem like it's not fair if I don't enter it.

Re: Is this sandbagging? 1 year, 1 month ago #30707

I wouldn't necessarily consider it sandbagging and it is cool that you shot a lower score considering the greens were just punched...

But I don't know if I'd enter the score myself. I don't fault you either way, with punched greens, or on a rare occasion around here I've played on "fake" greens even and I hate putting those scores in good or bad. Because you can't explain or justify it either way.

Like I said though, not sandbagging in my opinion. Of course I could be looked at because I say your not a sandbagger and I wouldn't put the score in. Apparently I'm biasing myself.

I don't put aerated green scores in mine, but I wouldn't blame you or say your sandbagging for doing so

If you set out playing a round as a practice round then no I wouldn't enter. But for the sake of all scoring and handicap you are supposed to enter every round. Did you pick any putts up? If so.. then do not enter the score. If not.. enter that baby!

Wiki says playing poorly until establishing a handicap and then raising bets, using the established handicap to unfairly win, so if that is not your intent I'd say leave it out.

There's such a "Fine Line" for me in a interpersonal way for posting scores versus declaring it a practice round.

I may very well be the person to judge on this one but I would post it. If you followed the rules of golf throughout your round, just post it. In my opinion, your better off posting than not IF YOU FOLLOWED THE USGA RULES OF GOLF.

If you picked one up (even just one time) or didn't hole a putt at some point, don't post it.

Just my 2 cents.

Sandbagging to me is when someone who is say a 4 says they're a 14. I wouldn't say you are sandbagging.

Yeah, I don't believe you are sandbagging. I try to enter every score, whether it is just "practice" or not. I feel that every time I go out to play, I am "practicing" something. The only way to know if you are getting better is to put every score in regardless of the conditions you play in. This can show your progress on how well you play in any condition. How many times do you actually get to play in perfect conditions anyway?
